On a lark, I did an image search on Bing for the name of one of the features we shipped in Windows Embedded Standard 7. Here's a collection of thumbnails from the results, I picked out just a few.

Can you tell the name of the embedded feature I searched for?

For those who attended TechEd 2010 (http://www.msteched.com) in New Orleans, June 7th – 10th, and stopped by our booth and/or attended at least one of our sessions, thank you very much.  It was our pleasure to meet you, answer your questions, show you demos, get your feedback, and talk with you about the products we work on in the Windows Embedded team.  Blogs, whitepapers, tutorials, forums, etc. are great but there is no substitute for meeting face-to-face.

Also, thank you for the opportunity to continue those discussions at the evening crawfish party where I could get out of my slacks and dress shoes and in to shorts and a t-shirt.  Even if you just came to eat and drink for free, it was our pleasure to host you.  I hope I did more listening than talking.  It is hard to resist telling people all about the Windows Embedded line of products.  We hope to see you next year.

For those of you who didn’t make it to TechEd 2010, you are in luck.  You can get access to the sessions online (http://www.msteched.com/Tracks/WindowsEmbedded) without having to endure the hot and humid weather.  I hear there is a pretty good session on the multimedia potential of Windows Embedded Standard 7.

Windows Embedded Developer Update (WEDU) for Windows Embedded Standard 7 has Released

      $
      0
      0

On June 28th, 2010 a new tool was released that provides another way for developers to service their Windows Embedded Standard 7  distribution shares. The tool is called Windows Embedded Developer Update (WEDU) and consists of a client and server architecture- the client can be downloaded to the developer machine and will connect to the server to look for updates. WEDU has the ability to determine if an update is already installed in the distribution share and show only those updates that are new. Developers can then select which updates they want to apply. The client will also offer updates to existing tools like ICE.

The WEDU client can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center, and for more information see this page. There is also a great video interview with Robert Peterson and Matthew Yip where they explain the benefits of WEDU particularly for developers building with Standard 7.

Windows Embedded Standard 7 Servicing Overview

      $
      0
      0

      Introduction

Compared to XPe, there will be an increased number of options for servicing Windows Embedded Standard 7 runtime images, Distribution Shares, and tools. This article will give a brief overview of what will be offered for servicing in Standard 7. Note that there may be more in-depth coverage on some of these topics in future articles, so in the meantime we encourage you to leave a comment here or ask any specific questions you might have on the Windows Embedded Standard forums.

Adding Updates in Image Configuration Editor

The first servicing scenario you’ll likely have to deal with is deciding which updates to include when creating your image, in order to ensure maximum security and reliability. As the number of updates grows over time, the task of determining which updates should or should not be added to an image becomes increasingly time-consuming. Fortunately, the Image Configuration Editor (ICE) in Windows Embedded Standard 7 offers a simple solution: functionality to add only those updates which are applicable to the features in your answer file.

From the “Validate” menu, select “Add Applicable Updates.”

      clip_image001

All applicable updates will then be placed into your answer file. Note that you can find out which feature caused the updated to be brought into the answer file by checking the ParentPackages field under the Properties tab.

Developer Tools and Distribution Share Servicing: ECE, MOO, and Windows Embedded Developer Update (WEDU)

The next logical question to ask is: how do these updates get into the Distribution Share? While updates will still be available for download via Embedded Communications Extranet (ECE) and Microsoft OEM Online (MOO) as in XPe, Standard 7 will also offer a new option known as Windows Embedded Developer Update (WEDU).

WEDU allows the developer to automatically download and import updates into the Distribution Share as soon as they become available. WEDU is also able to update to the developer tools, such as Image Configuration Editor. WEDU is available from the Microsoft Download Center, and more information can also be found here.

      Windows Update

New for Standard 7 is that it will have the ability to use Windows Update to update devices directly, similar to desktop PCs. In Standard 7 however, this will be an optional feature. Note that Windows Update will require that the device have internet access.

Servicing Directly on the Device: PkgScn and DISM

If your device is not connected to the internet or if you decide you do not want to use Windows Update for any other reason, then there is still an easy solution for servicing: command-line tools that can be run on the device itself. In-depth information on how to use these tools was covered in a previous blog articles: Package Scanner – Command Line Servicing for Windows Embedded, and Updating Your Windows Embedded Standard Image Using DISM.

      Service Packs

Unlike XPe, Standard 7 will have the ability to install a Service Pack instead of having to wipe and reload the device. As with Service Packs for desktop PCs, the purpose is to offer all updates up to a point in time rolled up into a single package file.

With the wide array of options for servicing offered in Standard 7, we’re confident that it will be easier than ever before to keep your embedded devices up to date. Thanks for reading this article, and please leave any questions or comments you might have below.

Announcement: License Assessment Tool for Windows Embedded Standard 7 is Available Now!

      $
      0
      0

The License Assessment Tool for Windows Embedded Standard 7 is a new tool that is developed to help you determine whether your image built with Windows Embedded Standard 7 can be licensed under a selected license SKU: WS7P, WS7E, or WS7C (more info here). The tool is now available to OEMs on the ECE/MOO websites. We are also working on to make it available at the recently launched Windows Embedded Developer Update (WEDU) channel for broader availability. Please watch for that if you are interested.

Here is how it works -

The tool does the SKU assessment by comparing your image, as either an answer file (.xml) or a DISM package output file (.dpo), against the known requirement for that SKU. Most of you are already familiar with the answer file concept. You can get the answer file either on your developer machine (e.g. with the Image Configuration Editor tool), or the target machine where an image is already deployed on. A DPO file is a slightly different concept but very easy to understand. It is basically an XML file where the info of all packages on a deployed image is dumped to. You can either use the DISM command directly or use the batch file DismPackageOutput.bat that locates in the same directory of the tool after it’s installed on your machine. The DISM command will look like this:

      %WINDIR%\System32\dism.exe /Format:List /English /Online /Get-Packages > MyImage.dpo

As we know, the smallest addressable unit in a Windows Embedded Standard 7 image is a package. However, the definition of different SKUs is at the feature level. Therefore, there is this challenge to map features to packages precisely. Plus, there are also times where a package is brought into your image as a dependency even though you didn’t intend to bring it in. The challenge is very fundamental and need great effort to solve. Our team is continuing looking at other approaches in future releases. At the meantime, the way the tool works is, if the tool detects (based on the package info) that there is a package that might relate to a feature that differentiate those 3 SKUs available today, you may be asked questions about its usage to ensure a more accurate assessment. In future blogs, I’ll provide more information in this area.

To install the tool, after you download it, you will launch setup.exe to install it on your developer machine. By default, it’ll be installed to this path:

      %WINDIR%\Program Files\Windows Embedded Standard 7\Tools

      There are 2 prerequisites:

      1. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 or higher. You can download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 from this Microsoft website.
      2. Microsoft Report Viewer 2008 or higher. You can download and install the Microsoft Report Viewer 2008 from this Microsoft website.

To launch the tool, once it’s installed, you can go to the shortcut Start->All Programs->Windows Embedded Standard 7 and choose “License Assessment Tool”. The tool can work without any previously released tools of Windows Embedded Standard 7, e.g. Image Configuration Editor (ICE).

An important note that I need to add here is: This tool is provided to you for informational purposes only. For official license information, you want to consult your commercial license agreement with Microsoft or the Microsoft affiliate serving your country.

I’d like to encourage you to use the tool and provide us feedback on how we can make it work better for your needs. Thank you.

Just this past week, the Windows Embedded Standard 7 Compatible Applications website was completely re-launched with a new design, new documentation, new templates, and refactored templates. Gone is the static HTML view we had in the past; replacing it is a dynamic site that’s searchable and sortable and includes expanding rows to more easily view only the information on the templates that you want and need.

      clip_image002

By refactoring many of the templates, we removed unnecessary packages that had little to no impact on the application’s functionality and decreased the footprint needed for the application to install and run. For example, the footprint of the 32-bit Silverlight 4 template was decreased over 350 Megabytes, from 1.36 GB to 1.01GB. Below are all of the templates that we fixed and refactored, making them more efficient & useful to you as a developer

      • Adobe Reader 9
      • Citrix Offline Plug-in 6
      • Citrix XenApp Plugin for Hosted Apps 11
      • Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2007
      • Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007
      • Microsoft Office Visio Viewer 2007
      • Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2007
      • Microsoft Silverlight 4
      • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007
      • Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007
      • Symantec Endpoint Protection 11
      • Windows Live Mail
      • Windows Live Messenger
      • Windows Live Photo Gallery
      • Windows Live Toolbar
      • XNA 3.1 (64bit only)

We also replaced some old templates with new, by removing the JRE 1.5 template and replacing it with 1.6, and removing the old eTrust Antivirus template and putting CA Antivirus 8.1 in its place.

To visit the Compatible Applications website, please visit http://www.windowsembedded.com/standardapplicationtemplates or select “Application Templates” from the “Community” menu in Image Configuration Editor.

The August 2010 Feature Update for Windows Embedded Standard 2009 is now available on ECE. This update is a collection of out-of-band features and tools and includes:

      • Web Services on Devices API for .NET for Windows Embedded Standard 2009

        • The Microsoft Web Services on Devices API for .NET (WSDAPI for .NET) supports the implementation of client-controlled devices and services and device hosts conforming to the Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) under .NET Framework technologies. DPWS is a reference specification that assembles and constrains a number of Web Service specifications for typical embedded environments. WSDAPI for .NET can be used for the development of both client and service solutions based on the DPWS stack.

        • This update also includes the Web Services on Devices API for .NET SDK.

      • Windows Embedded Standard 2009 SLD Export Tool

        • The Windows Embedded Standard 2009 SLD Export Tool is a power toy designed to help Windows Embedded developers easily search for and update resources in .sld files. The tool exports .sld files to Microsoft Excel where text search and editing can be performed on the data and then exported back to a .sld file. The SLD Export Tool supports the following features:

          • Exporting the following resource types from a .sld file into an Excel workbook:

            • File

            • Registry Key

            • Dependencies

            • Exporting updated Excel file back to a .sld file format

      • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 for Windows Embedded Standard 2009

        • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 is Microsoft's comprehensive and consistent programming model for building applications that have visually stunning user experiences, seamless and secure communication, and the ability to model a range of business processes. The .NET Framework 4 works side by side with older Framework versions. Applications that are based on earlier versions of the Framework will continue to run on the version targeted by default.

        • Microsoft.NET Framework 4.0 for Windows Embedded Standard 2009 is a setup component that includes the .NET Framework 4 installer and its required dependencies.

      • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Prerequisites for Windows Embedded Standard 2009

        • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Prerequisites for Windows Embedded Standard 2009 is a macro component that ensures the correct prerequisite dependencies are present on a runtime to support SQL Server 2008 R2 Express -the free edition of SQL Server for powering desktop, web and small server applications.
